Patients with ankylosing spondylitis, a painful and debilitating form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, are prone to poor posture as a result of chronic pain.
AS patients quickly learn to hold themselves in unnatural positions as a way of compensating for severe back pain, a secondary issue that can cause a host of other spinal issues. And since AS can cause fusion of the spine, it is extremely important to follow a regular exercise regimen.
While Attune Health recommends exercise programs for most of our patients as part of their treatment plan, it is arguably more important for patients with ankylosing spondylitis than any other form of arthritis.
Check out the article below from Medical News Today for exercise techniques that range from basic, such as simple stretches that promote good posture and strength, to more advanced techniques such as yoga and Pilates.
“In my opinion, even a small amount of exercise done daily can be very beneficial for this condition,” said Dr. Swamy Venuturupalli.
