Frequently Asked Questions: Phone Calls vs. Office Visits

  • What types of medical questions can be addressed over the phone?

Our medical assistants can typically address the following issues during a phone call:

    • Prescription refills for ongoing medications.
    • Clarifications about your current treatment plan.
    • Questions about minor side effects or symptoms that are not severe or urgent.
    • Lab test results, if no significant changes have occurred.
    • Administrative questions, such as appointment scheduling or insurance coverage.
  • When should I schedule an office visit instead of calling?

You should schedule an in-person visit for the following reasons:

    • New or worsening symptoms, such as increased joint pain, swelling, or fatigue.
    • Suspected complications from your condition or treatment.
    • A new medical issue that has not been previously evaluated.
    • The need for a physical examination, imaging, or diagnostic tests to better understand your symptoms.
    • Planning or starting a new treatment plan.
    • Routine follow-ups required for monitoring your condition.
  • Can I have a virtual visit instead of coming to the office?

Yes, generally if a virtual visit is preferred, it may be appropriate for certain situations, such as:

    • Follow-ups to discuss lab results or adjust medications without requiring a physical exam.
    • Non-urgent medical concerns or questions.

Please note that not all concerns can be handled virtually, and our team will guide you if an in-person visit is necessary.

  • What should I do if I’m not sure whether I need a phone call or an office visit?

If you are unsure, feel free to call our office. Our staff will ask you a few questions to determine the best course of action for your situation.

  • What should I do in case of an emergency?

If you experience a medical emergency, such as severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, or other life-threatening symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
